We’re developing a first-of-its-kind electricity link between the UK and the Netherlands, a vital step toward an integrated North Sea grid.
Together with our Dutch partner, TenneT, we are developing plans to build a new subsea cable (known as an interconnector) between Great Britain and the Netherlands. The project, called LionLink, will connect to a Dutch offshore windfarm, connecting the GB and Dutch electricity grids. LionLink will play an important role in reducing the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the UK government’s objectives to create a secure, reliable, and affordable energy supply for UK households.
Lionink will deliver a range of benefits, including:
First of its kind technology
LionLink will enable the cross-border transmission of clean electricity via subsea cables. As an Offshore Hybrid Asset (OHA), LionLink will also connect an offshore wind farm to the shore.
At the moment, offshore wind farms and interconnectors operate separately, connecting to the shore individually. In the future, OHAs could enable offshore wind and interconnectors to work together, helping the UK to achieve its net zero target by integrating more renewable energy onto the network.
LionLink will be the first step in the journey to a more interconnected North Sea grid. Take a look at our diagram for how this technology works:
