Headlines from the Transport Decarbonisation Plan (published by Department for Transport on 14 July 2021):
The bus and coach sector is responsible for 2.5% of the UK’s transport emissions.
Several bus operators support ambitions to achieve zero-emission bus fleets and have committed to purchase only ultra-low or zero-emission buses from 2025.
An initial consultation closed on 11 April 2021 and there will be a further consultation later in 2021 on a phase out date for the sale of new non-zero emission buses.
In due course, there will be a consultation on a phase out date for the sale of new non-zero emission coaches (likely to mirror 2035 up to 26 tonne lorry sales ban).
We will be reaching out to key stakeholders from across the bus and coach sector in order to gather their insights around the barriers, opportunities, and infrastructure requirements for decarbonising their sector. We’ll then turn these insights into clear recommendations for Government to help shape future plans and policies.
