National Grid supports LEAP Federation tech appeal with donation of 200 laptops
Schoolchildren in Hackney are set to benefit from a donation of laptops from National Grid following an urgent appeal by the LEAP Federation of schools.
The company has gifted 200 refurbished laptops in support of the appeal, which also smashed its £10,000 fundraising target, to help give pupils access to technology during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.
Accompanied by a ‘Griddles’ teddy bear, the laptops are being distributed to children across the Gayhurst, Kingsmead and Mandeville primary schools to help them keep in touch with their teachers and take part in their online learning curriculum.
Louise Nichols, Executive Head at the LEAP Federation, said: “The majority of our pupils come from the most deprived areas in Hackney and simply cannot afford the technology required to access their learning online at home. We’ve been amazed by the generosity of people and are so proud and grateful to have been able to support our children in this way.”
National Grid has been working with recycling partner Restore Technology to donate 1,000 refurbished laptops to schoolchildren and young people across the country.
Jeremy Cohen, Head of Responsible Business at National Grid, said: “Even as thousands of primary schools open their doors this month, there can be no doubt that many children will be feeling the effects of time away from the classroom and either having to compete with other family members for access to technology or having nothing at all. We’re delighted therefore to be able to support the LEAP Federation at this challenging time.”

National Grid in the UK
