10th January 2025 - North Wessex Downs VIP news
A temporary 30mph speed limit has been put in place along a short section of the A361 to the north of Devizes while we undertake a programme of drilling underneath the road.
Our project team is currently using a Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) to install ducting underneath the A361 rather than dig a trench across it, which would have required closing the road. This specialist equipment means we are able to keep the A361 open and minimise any long-term disruption to local traffic.
Once the ducting is securely in place beneath the road, we will be able to pull the new electricity cables through. Once installed and energised, these cables will replace the 4.6km section of overhead line and 13 pylons that are being removed as part of the Visual Impact Provision (VIP) project.
The 30mph speed restriction has been put in place along an approximately 700m section from its junction with West End and heading south towards Devizes. This is to ensure the safety of both our teams and road users and will be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works period.
The temporary speed limit is expected to remain in place until Wednesday 29 January and we are working with the local highways authority at Wiltshire Council to minimise disruption as much as possible.
