Have you spotted our unusual pylons in the North Wessex Downs?

Over the past few weeks passers-by may have noticed some new and slightly unusual one-armed pylons being installed close to Horton Road and Rickpiece Plantation.

These are temporary transmission pylons which are key to making sure there is no disruption to the power network while construction is underway for the North Wessex Downs project.

Work is taking place to transfer the overhead lines from either side of our existing pylons to the new temporary one-armed pylons.

Moving the overhead lines allows space for the team to safely work on the new cable sealing end compounds (CSECs) that are required at either end of the underground cable.

The CSECs will connect the new underground cables to the remaining existing overhead line on completion of the North Wessex Downs project, meaning our team will be able to safely and smoothly switchover power with no interruption to supplies.

Our project will replace 4.6km of overhead electricity line and 13 pylons with underground cable in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape.

Reducing the visual impact of the overhead line to the north of Devizes will significantly enhance the local landscape, with the pylons on track to be removed in 2026.

If you have any questions about the project or the works taking place, please contact the team by emailing [email protected] or calling 0330 134 0051 (and leaving a message if you are prompted).
