Sandford substation welcomes new transformer

19 April 2021

National Grid has successfully delivered a new 178 tonne transformer, to the 400,000-volt Sandford substation site it is building as part of the Hinkley Connection Project, a new 57 km high-voltage electricity line that will connect six million homes and businesses to new sources of low carbon energy. It will help the UK to meet ambitious targets to achieve net zero by 2050.

It’s no Joker, Bat man comes to Hinkley Connection Project

Bats are big news in Somerset with 17 of the 18 species of British bat found in the county. The Hinkley Connection Project has jointly-funded a full-time PhD project to research the most effective strategies to mitigate construction impact on bat populations. The research findings will be applied on future major construction projects and used by local planning authorities across the UK.

National Grid awards grant to Necessary Furniture to continue supporting the Kent community

9 April 2021

National Grid has awarded the latest funding from its Community Grants Programme (CGP) to Necessary Furniture, an organisation in Canterbury, Kent that refurbishes and recycles donated furniture for families on a low income. The organisation is dependent on a fleet of vans for the collection and delivery of goods. The grant will help the organisation replace an old van, which was coming to the end of its useful life.

Yorkshire set to play crucial role in helping the UK meet green energy ambitions

National Grid is to consult on a proposed energy project in Yorkshire. The planned energy link to Yorkshire from Scotland will bring more renewable power to the network and the link will play an important part in helping the country meet its net zero ambitions. Virtual consultation sessions will run from Monday 29 March to Friday 23 April.
