West Yorkshire Overhead Line

Yorkshire & the Humber

In recent years we’ve been refurbishing part of our overhead line network in West Yorkshire. The overhead lines in the area were commissioned in the late 1960's and after almost 50 years of service they need to be refurbished. This essential maintenance will ensure we continue to provide a reliable supply of energy to homes and businesses for years to come.

Project description

This is a huge project involving hundreds of workers and involves renovating 51.4 km of overhead line across West Yorkshire. The overhead line crosses four rail lines, seven sections of motorway, seventy-five roads, twenty-one lanes, multiple paths, houses, commercial and industrial properties, and a golf course.

We’re now gearing up to refurbish the remaining sections of overhead line and you should see some of our workers along the route preparing access so we can complete this essential work by April 2019.

Working on the overhead line through the many communities across West Yorkshire is a huge undertaking and as you can imagine involves a large number of people.  At any given time there could be 200 people working on the line including sub-contractors and off-site staff. We will get this work done as quickly and safely as we can, while keeping the impact on local communities to a minimum. The work will not impact on the electricity supply to homes or businesses in the area.

During certain parts of the work it will be necessary to use netting, and scaffolding over roads and byways while we replace insulators, tower fittings and conductors along the route.

Our contractor’s normal working hours are between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. On the rare occasions we have to work outside these hours we will let you know well in advance.

At National Grid we believe in being a good neighbour and if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with a member of our community relations team who will be happy to help.
