Recognising SHESQ excellence

Presented with the Gold award was Ian Baxter from Western Power Distribution (WPD), nominated by Bruce Lockyer and Bethan Coleman for going ‘above and beyond’ when it came to testing and commissioning of the first circuit on the 132kV cables.

It was a long day with Ian completing the commissioning at 10pm. In the run up to the second circuit commissioning, Ian’s methodical approach to the problem was invaluable. “Ian has continually shown a professional and resilient approach working with J Murphy and Sons and National Grid through all the stages of the W route commissioning. He has been an exemplary ambassador for WPD and there can be no doubt of his ability to respond under pressure,” says Bruce.

The Silver award winner is Babcock International’s Kumaresan Rajagopal for safety observations that saw him take action against a sub-contractor who was delivering Herras fencing. There were numerous safety issues with the delivery, including incorrect PPE, attempting to access the rear of the wagon without edge protection or ladders, and lifting equipment not working. Kumaresan instructed the driver to stop everything and explained why Babcock would not accept the delivery. The driver was instructed to make his load safe for transport again and leave site. The incident was reported back to Babcock procurement and the supplier has been spoken to. They returned the next day to deliver and no issues arose second time around.

Zarah Agao and Nick Press of J Murphy & Sons have both been recognised with Bronze awards for their push to deliver and inform about National Grid’s Evie’s Whale campaign, which aims to reduce single-use plastics across all offices and sites.

Zarah and Nick took the snippets of information provided and created a practical plan and drive to pursue a lower single-use plastic environment. They engaged colleagues in discussions and proactively searched for solutions 'outside the box' and from other initiatives. Changes to the workplace have already happened. Water bottles have been distributed and Clevedon are becoming the first J Murphy and Sons construction site to engage in the closed loop Lyreco programme, which sees plastic soap bottles get sent back to the manufacturer to be cleaned, refilled and reused.
