£90m contract awarded to help build Viking Link interconnector
The Viking Link interconnector project has reached a major milestone with the appointment of Balfour Beatty to handle onshore cable installation.
Infrastructure specialists Balfour Beatty have been awarded a £90m contract to deliver the onshore civil works for the Viking Link interconnector project. As part of the four-year contract Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the civil engineering and installation of 68Km of high-voltage cabling across Lincolnshire. This will form part of the 760Km Viking Link interconnector that will link Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire and Revsing in Denmark.
Interconnectors play a key part in our journey towards net zero, allowing us to share renewable energy with our European neighbours. When it is complete Viking Link will supply sustainable electricity for 1.4 million homes in Britain and improve the security of energy supply for both the UK and Denmark.
“This contract is a major milestone in the next part of the project. We’re pleased to be working with Balfour Beatty, who will deliver the onshore cable installation section of the Viking Link Interconnector between landfall site at Sandilands and the Converter Station at Bicker Fen.
“Viking Link will enable Great Britain to import and export electricity; provide a secure supply of affordable electricity and play a vital role in helping to decarbonise the UK’s power supply on our journey to a net zero carbon energy system,” explains Mike Elmer, Viking Link Project Director for National Grid Ventures.
