Opportunity for communities to have their say on plans for a new National Grid substation

  • National Grid is running a consultation from 18 September to 16 October 2024 on its plans for a new electricity substation approximately 1.4km from Navenby, Lincolnshire
  • The proposed Navenby Substation will connect new sources of clean energy to the grid, boosting energy security and progress towards net zero
  • Local people are invited to attend consultation events to learn more about the proposal

National Grid is consulting on proposals to build a new substation approximately 1.4km from Navenby, Lincolnshire.

The local community is invited to find out more about National Grid’s plans and provide their feedback:

  • Online: www.nationalgrid.com/navenby
  • In-person: Friday 27 September 2024 from 3pm – 7pm at The Venue, Navenby, Lincoln LN5 0JJ
  • Webinar: Tuesday 1 October from 6pm. To register to attend, follow the link on our webpage.

Find out more on our Navenby Substation project website.

People are welcome to drop in at any point during these sessions, and team members will be available to answer their questions. Feedback from local residents will help to shape proposals and the legacy it hopes to leave for the community. National Grid understands and appreciates the concern local people can feel about new infrastructure, and is committed to leaving a positive impact - this consultation will help to achieve that.

The proposed substation will be located to the north of Heath Lane, with access from Heath Lane. The substation will be set back from the road and cover approximately 32 acres. It will be an ‘open air’ substation with a maximum height of 15 metres. Four new pylons will also be constructed as part of the plans, and two existing pylons will be dismantled.

The substation is being developed in response to the need to connect new low carbon energy projects to the electricity transmission network. In the Navenby area several projects – including solar developments Springwell Solar and Fosse Green – have requested new power connections, and as a regulated business National Grid has a legal obligation to meet these requests.

National Grid has identified the site near Navenby as the best option through a formal siting study, where five possible sites were shortlisted. The five sites went through a rigorous optioneering process, taking into consideration the impact on the local community, proximity to the existing overhead line to reduce the need for new pylons, environmental factors, land availability and other key measures.

Matt Doherty, Lead Connections Engineer at National Grid, said: “This proposed new substation will play a vital role in meeting our duty to connect new low carbon projects to the grid, helping to boost energy security and power the region with clean, more affordable sources of energy.

“We’re also keen to ensure the project has a long-term positive impact on the local community and look forward to speaking to local residents as we develop our proposals, and hearing how best we can support groups and initiatives across Navenby alongside this substation development.”

National Grid is on track to submit a planning application to North Kesteven District Council in spring 2025, and expect the proposed substation in Navenby to begin construction in summer 2026, with completion in late 2029.
