[30 November] Ofgem gives green light to £12.7m hydrogen trial project

Ofgem’s Network Innovation Competition has approved a first of its kind offline hydrogen research facility to understand how transmission assets could be used to transport hydrogen in the future to heat homes and deliver green energy to industry.

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) has been successful in securing £8.12m of funding from Ofgem’s Network Innovation Competition (NIC) to research the uprating of overhead lines, with the remainder being funded by National Grid.

The UK has today revealed its first sponsors for COP26 as it gears up for a year of climate action ahead of the summit in Glasgow. National Grid is one of the first Principal Partners and will be working closely alongside government, and the other sponsors, Scottish Power, SSE and NatWest Group, to ensure the delivery of a successful and ambitious COP next November.

[9 November] Landmark study reviews current technology that could help roll out hydrogen across the UK gas network

National Grid, in collaboration with Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, SGN and Wales & West Utilities, have completed a feasibility study, delivered by Costain Oil & Gas that could promote an earlier and more flexible conversion to hydrogen for certain areas of the UK gas network.

[9 November] River Humber gas pipeline – officially world record breaking 

9 November 2020

A replacement gas pipeline under the River Humber has secured a place in the Guinness World Records. It is officially the world’s longest hydraulically inserted pipeline at 4.96km. Work to complete the installation continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to secure supply of up to 25% of Britain’s gas ahead of the winter months
