National Grid joined forces with the East of England Energy Group at the Festival of Knowledge, a Norfolk Chambers of Commerce event, to be part of the dedicated All Energy Zone, inspiring young people through showcasing the future of the energy industry.
The event gave National Grid the chance to hear directly from young people about career paths they are interested in, helping to shape how the energy industry attracts and supports the next generation of talent.
Visitors had an opportunity to learn about National Grid during the event, hearing about The Great Grid Upgrade, which is the largest overhaul of the electricity network in generations, and the diverse career opportunities available in the energy sector.
Alongside other leaders in the industry, including RWE, Equinor, and Orsted, National Grid volunteers spoke with young people aged 14-17, talking about their experiences and listening to young people’s hopes for shaping the future of energy.
Representatives also shared insights into National Grid careers spanning engineering, planning, legal and communications functions. Young people were especially interested in opportunities in science and geography, with potential future roles including quantity surveying, technical and environmental areas, and planning consents.
National Grid is investing £30bn in the UK to 2029. This investment will support 55,000 more jobs by the end of the decade.
Emma Bennett, Head of Socioeconomic and Community Benefits, said: “Speaking to young people at this year’s Festival of Knowledge and hearing about why the future of energy matters to them, was an invaluable experience.
“Energy is one of Norfolk's key growth sectors and we hope to spark young people’s interest in the exciting opportunities created by the energy transition, and we look forward to collaborating with regional employers in inspiring the next generation at future events.”
Robert Jones, Senior Project Manager, East Anglia Technical Lead, representing National Grid at the event, said: "As I reach retirement, I am blown away by how talented the next generation is. It's been great to be able to use my experience to positively tell the National Grid story and hopefully inspire some of the young people to apply for careers in National Grid.
“I know for certain young people will have a huge amount to add to an energy future that boosts economic growth and delivers jobs in the region.”
