National Grid is warning motorists to allow extra time for their journeys as engineers embark on a key phase of a vital gas mains replacement project.
Engineers are replacing 100m of ageing metallic gas mains running across the A3044 roundabout near the Heathrow Airport perimeter.
Motorists using local roads especially Airport Way, Stanwell Moor Road and the Southern Perimeter Road, should expect long delays from 8pm on Friday (December 2).
Project Engineer Mark Whittaker explained: “This is essential work that we must complete to ensure people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in the future.”
Work is expected to take around 10 days to complete with engineers working extended hours seven days a week to get the work completed as quickly as possible.
National Grid has worked closely with the local authorities and BAA to ensure the work is delivered with minimum of disruption.
Mark added: “We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause. With this particular project location there is no quiet time to complete the work but we are doing all we can to minimise delays.”
The work is part of a scheme to replace 1km of old cast iron gas mains with new plastic pipes.
Work is being carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.

The project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
