Barwell residents invited to find out more about £390,000 gas main revamp

08/12/2011

National Grid is inviting Barwell residents and traders to an information event so they can learn more about upcoming gas mains replacement taking place in Barwell work and how it will affect them.

An information bus with full details of the work will be at the One Stop, Belle Vue Road on Thursday 15 December from 9.00am to 6.00pm.

National Grid will be replacing 3,200 metres of old metal gas mains with new hard-wearing plastic pipe which is more durable and will last for 80 years if left undisturbed once underground.

The roads affected are Queensway, Mayfield Way, Shenton Road, Hastings Road, Wightman Road, Mount Avenue, Meadow Road, Kingsfield Road, Newlands road, Frisby Road and The Close.

Engineers from Amec, who will be carrying out the work on behalf National Grid, will begin work week commencing 23 January 2012.  The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of April 2012.

Where possible, the new plastic pipe will be inserted inside the old metal main reducing the need for digging.  However, for the safety of the travelling public and our workforce it will be necessary to install two-way traffic lights along Queensway during the last month of work.

Construction engineer, Chris Morley, said: “Please come along and meet us and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We wish to assure everyone that we will do our upmost to minimise any disruption associated with this work.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused but these are essential works which are required to ensure the people in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for cooking and heating.”

Gas supplies will only be affected when the gas supply is being transferred from the old pipe to the new one.  Supplies will only be disrupted during that day, and residents and businesses that are affected will be contacted by our customer services team before work starts in their area.

Our engineers may need access to properties but you should always ask to see official identification before allowing anyone into your home or business.  If in doubt about the identity of an engineer, please call 0845 605 6677.

The project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic gas mains within 30 metres of buildings.
