Staff from National Grid have gone back to school at Weaver Close CE Primary School in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, to teach the pupils about energy.
Thirteen staff from National Grid’s Information Services department have taught eight lessons at the school to pupils from year 5 and 6, teaching them about energy and forces through fun facts and experiments.
School Power is a new educational initiative that National Grid has had developed to engage with children. It is created to inspire the inventors, engineers and scientists of the future; it's full of fascinating facts, interactive activities and fun experiments – all about power and the exciting themes of Energy, Forces and Materials. School Power is part of National Grid's commitment to education and the community.
Head teacher Mrs Sharon Barnes commented, “It is wonderful to see a company like National Grid coming into our school, explaining what they do and how their work relates to what the children have to learn through the curriculum and making the learning and science fun.
“The School Power initiative also gives teachers and schools a further resource to use to teach various topics from the national curriculum topics.”
Carolyn Sanders, IS service manager at National Grid said: “School Power is all about encouraging children to enjoy science, showing them how some of the experiments relate to every day life and the equipment and technology we use.
“It was a little nerve-racking for us but the children were great and really got involved in the lessons and they all loved the different experiments we did, from making magnets, testing what floats and seeing how solids, liquids and gases behave. At times it got very messy but lots of fun.”
