The latest phase of essential gas mains replacement work in Wealdstone will begin on Monday 01 March 2010.
This work forms part of National Grid’s £2million programme to replace the area’s iron gas mains with new hard wearing plastic pipes, which should last for 80 years if left undisturbed.
Work will start in The Bridge, Wealdstone, between Masons Avenue and High Street.
This work will take approximately seven weeks, during which The Bridge will be made one way southbound between High Street and George Gange Way. There will be a signed diversion in place for northbound traffic.
Once this is complete, further work will take place in Wealdstone High Street between Masons Avenue and Palmerston Road. This will take approximately five weeks to complete.
Work has been carefully planned in close consultation with the local authority and other agencies to ensure it is carried out with a minimum of disruption. Wherever possible the new pipes will be inserted into the old mains to reduce the need for digging.
National Grid Construction Operations Manager Mick Morris said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However this project will help ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies in future years.”
Work is being carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.
If local people have any queries about the work they can call our helpline on 0800 096 5678.
The project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme to replace all metallic gas mains within 30 metres of buildings as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
