Over 100,000 Cub Scouts have been issued with Activity Packs since National Grid began its sponsorship of the Home Safety Badge in 2007.
To celebrate this milestone, National Grid invited Cub Scout leaders who work for the company, and whose Cub Scout packs have received funding from the company’s Employee Community Grants, to bring their Cub Scouts along to a “Mad Science” event held at Bath Place in Warwick.
Also by way of acknowledging their partnership with the Scout Association National Grid has commissioned five plaques which will be displayed in the reception areas of their offices in Warwick, Strand, Hinckley, Northampton and Berkshire.
Over 60 Cub Scouts joined National Grid Transmission Director, Chris Murray to see the “Mad Science” spectacular fire and ice show. This was followed by “Watts Up” workshops where the Cub Scouts learned about electricity, making indoor lightning and conducting hair-raising experiments with an electro-static generator.
Transmission Director Chris Murray, who hosted the event, said: “Sponsorship of the Cub Scouts Home Safety Badge has allowed us to get our safety messages to over 100,000 Cubs and their families.
Safety is a key issue for National Grid and helping youngsters become aware of the importance of safety in their home environment is a very good place to start.
It is a fantastic milestone and deserves recognition and what better way to celebrate than with some of the Cub Scouts who have taken the Badge!”
Leader, Janet Crossley from the 2nd Warwickshire Sea Cubs said: “I am delighted to be able to bring my Cub Scout Pack along to the event especially as they are currently working on the Home Safety Badge. The pack is designed to be interesting and fun. We had a great laugh using the scratch and sniff card so I could teach the Cubs what gas smells like.”
Phoebe from the 1st Wellesbourne Cub Scouts said “Coming along to this Mad Science day was cool. My friends will be so jealous. They don’t get to do stuff like this.”
