A £250,000 project to improve the gas supply in Hinckley is due to start next month.
On Tuesday 06 April work will start on the renewal of the old cast iron gas main that runs along Upper Bond Street.
The work will start at the junction of Upper Bond Street and Derby Road. From there it will move towards the town centre where it will end at the junction of Lower Bond Street and Hollycroft. The work will then head along Hollycroft to the junction of Shakespeare Drive.
The project is expected to take around 18 weeks to complete. During this time it will be necessary to install temporary traffic lights which will move along the road as the work progresses.
Kevin Tongue, National Grid’s project manager said: ‘This project is a major investment in the safety and reliability of the gas network in Hinckley.
‘The old gas main has reached the end of its working life and we are replacing it with new hard-wearing plastic pipe which, once in the ground, will last for around 80 years with little or no maintenance. I realise that road works can cause disruption for motorists but I ask the public to bear with us. This will be short term inconvenience for a long term benefit.’
The work will be carried out on behalf of National Grid by Enterprise PLC and is part of the company's 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network.
