National Grid says “Thank You” to West Ham residents and businesses

18/09/2009

Electricity transmission company National Grid would like to say “thank you” to residents and businesses in West Ham for their co-operation during our movement of a giant 175-tonne transformer from the local substation on Friday 04 September.

People living and working in Cody Road, Stephenson Street and Beckton Road were asked to move their vehicles between 8pm and midnight to enable the 20-axle, 60 metre-long vehicle to leave the site safely.

Project manager Dave Palser said:  “Moving a huge piece of equipment such as this takes careful planning and co-operation and I would like to thank everyone along the route for their assistance in finding alternative parking on Friday evening.  I’d particularly like to thank the staff at the West Ham bus garage for their co-operation as potentially we could have had a big impact on their services.

“We try to avoid causing disruption wherever possible, by moving the vehicle in several stages and at night.   Abnormal Load Engineering Limited (ALE), who moved the transformer on our behalf, worked closely with the Highways Agency, police and local councils to co-ordinate the route”.
