A £1.5million upgrade by National Grid will revitalise the gas delivery system in Shepherd’s Bush to ensure safe, secure and reliable supplies for the 21st century.
From 20 April the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, will begin replacing 6.5km of iron gas mains with new plastic pipes.
The work will take place in Goldhawk Road, Shepherd’s Bush Green, Uxbridge Road and Shepherds Bush Road. Work on the project will begin in Goldhawk Road.
The project has been planned in close consultation with the local authority, police and local transport providers.
Wherever possible the new pipes will be inserted into the old ones to minimise the need for excavations and to reduce traffic disruption.
There may be the need for road and lane closures while we complete these works. These will be agreed with the local highways department and advanced warning notices will be given. Work should be complete by the end of the year.
Construction Operations Engineer Pat Nathan, said: “The existing mains have provided many years of service but it is now time to replace them. The new plastic mains will provide a safe, secure and reliable gas supply for the future.
“We will be working hard to minimise disruption and apologise for any inconvenience our works may cause.”
Mr Nathan added: “It’s worth remembering that once they are installed the new mains should last for a minimum of 80 years if they are left undisturbed.”
This essential work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive, to replace all metallic mains within 30 metres of buildings.
