Pupils at Sennybridge Community Primary School are making the most of the summer weather, thanks to a new outdoor classroom, built with support from energy infrastructure company, National Grid.
The new area has created a dedicated outdoor space for the pupils and is helping to enhance the children's learning experiences, while meeting the requirements of the Foundation Phase and providing a more stimulating play environment for the wider community.
The improvements include pathways of different textures, flowerbeds, logged area, a sand area, visual and aural stimulation and various play equipment.
The project is one of a number of local initiatives supported though National Grid’s Community Involvement Programme, which aims to leave a positive legacy for communities close to the recently completed Felindre to Tirley natural gas pipeline.
Another local initiative supported by National Grid was the redevelopment of the nearby Trecastle Community Hall's play area and provision of disabled access to the hall.
Head teacher Mrs Lynnette Thomas said: “The new classroom garden and games area are not only a great boost to the pupils, but to the wide variety of groups such as the Rainbows and Brownies, Ysgol Feithrin and Sennybridge playgroups.
“We're really grateful to National Grid for helping boost our funds for this project. Our parents have worked tirelessly to make this project become a reality and is of great benefit to the local community as a whole.”
National Grid senior project manager, Martin Kinsey, said: “We appreciate that our construction works were an inconvenience to the communities along the route, especially with the extra traffic using the local roads. Supporting school and community projects such as these is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community for their tolerance and understanding.”
The Felindre to Tirley natural gas pipeline is part of National Grid’s Milford Haven Gas Connections Project, which will be able to provide around 20% of the country’s gas supplies when running at full capacity.
