National Grid’s £5 million gas network improvement scheme currently underway in Bridgnorth is now entering its final phase.
On Monday, March 2, work will start in Underhill Street where the old metal gas main will be replaced with a new, long-lasting plastic pipe. The work will take four weeks to complete. Temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction with Cartway and Bridge Street and will be moved along Underhill Street as work progresses.
The scheme is due to finish by April, several weeks ahead of schedule. By that time more than 12 miles of new pipe will have been laid and will help to ensure that Bridgnorth residents continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.
The work is being carried out by the West Midlands Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and utility construction company Morgan Est.
Andy Hardy, Gas Alliance project manager said: 'Underhill Street is a very busy area and we realise that the temporary traffic lights will cause some disruption to motorists. However, we ask them to bear with us. The project is nearly finished and will have a long-term benefit for the town. The new pipe should last for up to 80 years with little or no maintenance.
‘People want to be able to take their gas supply for granted and these improvements will help to make sure that the residents can do just that.'
The project is part of National Grid’s 30-year programme to improve the gas supply network across Britain.
