Jurassic age is brought to life at Bishops Wood Centre

20/01/2009

Bishops Wood Environment Centre, which is supported by National Grid and based at the company’s electricity substation near Stourport, will open its doors to the public on Sunday 8 February from 2pm to 4pm when it hosts 'Day of the Dinosaurs'.

In keeping with the Centre’s aim to teach adults and children about the natural world, people of all ages are welcome to enjoy stories of dinosaurs, dragons and rocks that talk.  Activities will include making your own fossil casts and creating pictures of scenes from when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Visitors will also be given the opportunity to explore the award winning environmental centre. The Centre suggests an entrance donation of £2 for adults and children, and £1 for members of Friends of Bishops Wood.

John Rhymer, Head of Bishops Wood Centre, said: “It isn’t just children who love dinosaurs. They are fascinating creatures whose remains gave rise to legends about dragons and monsters.  Everyone is welcome to try their hand at making fossil replicas which they can take away to add to their own collections.”

Friends of Bishops Wood organise monthly events to showcase the variety of work that takes place at the centre. Future events include:

Sunday 29 March - 11am to 3 pm: Recycling and Composting Open Day
The day features an array of displays, exhibits, talks and hands-on activities relating to the theme of recycling and composting. Meet the experts, become a worm in the giant compost bin and join in the race to recycle.

-Ends-

National Grid Environmental Education Centres
Bishops Wood is part of National Grid's network of environmental education centres based on electricity substation sites around the UK.  Our centres are run in partnership with local education authorities, environmental charities and other organisations, and provide outdoor learning opportunities for schools and a range of activities and training for adults, community groups and companies.

National Grid environmental education centre sites range in size from a few acres in an urban setting to 80 acres of meadows and ancient woodland.  All provide a safe and secure environment for all age groups to learn about their natural world.

Bishops Wood Centre is situated just off the A449 at Crossway Green, near Stourport, and is run as a partnership between National Grid, Worcestershire County Council and Worcester College of Technology. Visit www.bishopswoodcentre.org.uk for further information.
