Gas works in the pipeline for Chantry Park

18/09/2009

Work to replace a gas main in Ipswich’s Chantry Park is due to start on Monday (21 September).

Gas company National Grid will be laying 600 metres of new, long-lasting plastic pipe through the park, which will replace an existing cast iron main. The work is expected to take six weeks and access to the park will be maintained throughout the project.

National Grid Network Supervisor Karl Shipp said: “This work will ensure National Grid can continue to provide safe and reliable gas supplies for many years to come.

“We apologise for any inconvenience our works may cause park users. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and complete the works as soon as possible.

“Safety is our top priority. Our works will be surrounded by safety fencing and the ground will be fully reinstated once the new pipes have been laid.”

The work represents the final phase of a project to renew 2.5kms of gas main in London Road, from the Interchange Retail Park to Crane Hill. The existing iron mains are being replaced with durable, new plastic pipes that have a life-span of 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.

The work is part of a national mains renewal programme developed by National Grid in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive and industry regulator Ofgem.
