Gasmen paddle for REHAB UK

13/05/2009

A group of employees from Wolverhampton will be swapping pipes for paddles on Sunday, May 17 when they take part in the Birmingham Dragon Boat Challenge.

Ten members of staff from Stafford Road based West Midlands Gas Alliance will be competing in the Challenge to raise money for Rehab UK, a charity which helps people with physical disabilities integrate into society.

The event will be taking place on Edgbaston Reservoir where the Gas Alliance ‘Dragon Demons’ will take on teams from companies across the city.  Each team will race in a series of heats with the winners of each going through to the final.  The overall winner will receive a trophy to mark their achievement.

The Gas Alliance team captain, project manager Margery Lumsdaine said:  ‘We are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity.  We have been supporters of Rehab UK since one of our workmates was seriously injured last year in a road accident and sustained multiple injuries.  With the help of Rehab UK he has made a full recovery and has been able to return to work.’
Rehab UK provides assessment, training and development programmes that enable people with disabilities to break into the workforce.  Founded in 1994, the development of a network of innovative brain injury centres is now the main focus of its work.
