The winners of National Grid’s annual Chairman’s Award for Health have donated their £2000 prize to two Rotherham-based charities. The employees of Fulcrum, a subsidiary of National Grid based in Rotherham, have divided the prize money between Rotherham Mind and Newman Special School.
The prize was won by Fulcrum’s Wellbeing Team, a group of staff from different parts of the company who help to promote a programme of health-related events.
Their implementation of the Mental Health First Aid programme, delivered by Rotherham Primary Care Trust, means Fulcrum staff can recognise stress factors and other symptoms of mental health problems in themselves and others, and know what action to take and how to provide advice and support.
In line with National Grid’s Inclusion and Diversity policy, the team have also worked to combat the stigma associated with mental health problems.
The Chairman’s Awards recognise the achievements of National Grid employees, and their contractor colleagues, in the fields of safety, health, environment, community contribution, excellence in customer delivery and inclusion and diversity. They celebrate those who go ‘above and beyond’ their day job in the pursuit of excellence, demonstrating the true power of action.
Dave Reynolds, Learning and Development Assistant at Fulcrum and a member of the winning team, said: “It’s such a privilege to be able to pledge this money to such good, local causes. Newman School are putting the money towards constructing outside classrooms for use in the summer months, and we’ve been invited back to see them once they’re complete.”
