Volunteers from Warwick-based National Grid recently took on the challenge of transforming a tarmac playground into an outdoor learning area for the pupils of Anderton Park School on Dennis Road in Birmingham.
The 29 volunteers, from the Safety, Health, Environment and Security department at National Grid, spent a day out of the office to turn the playground into an area that will enhance the children’s education and development.
The team created a sensory garden filled with different textures, fragrances and colours, a mini-beast habitat and a quiet area providing an outdoor classroom and somewhere for children to read in during break time.
Andy Buxton, one of the National Grid volunteers, said: “It was a fantastic day, and a real camaraderie developed between everyone involved. People will see it’s a job well done and hopefully others will want to get involved in these types of projects in future.
“It’s about giving something back to the community. It’s hard work but it’s good for the soul.
“The project was really helped by National Grid’s contractors and suppliers - A P Broome, Enterprise, Bagnalls Ltd, GAP and HSS. We’d like to say a big thank you to them for their support.”
