Get Into Trees – Volunteer Day At Penwortham

20/11/2007

Penwortham Environmental Education Centre is inviting volunteers to have a ‘Treemendous’  time with them on Wednesday 28th November 2007 as they celebrate National Tree Week.

The centre, based in the grounds of National Grid’s high-voltage electricity substation on Howick Cross Lane, off the A49 at Penwortham, near Preston, will be celebrating this annual occasion by holding a special activity day concerning everything to do with trees.

Activities will take place between 10am and 3pm, allowing volunteers to try their hand at a variety of skills such as willow weaving and coppicing.  There will also be a session on tree identification.

Julie Norman, centre manager, said:  “This will be an exciting day with something for everyone.  There will be a chance to gain some new and unusual skills, as well as to learn more about the local environment and wildlife that can be found near our homes.”

Please contact the centre on 01772 751110 for more information.

Notes to Editors:

National Grid Environmental education centres
Penwortham is part of National Grid's network of environmental education centres based on electricity substation sites around the UK.  Our centres are run in partnership with local education authorities, environmental charities and other organisations, and provide outdoor learning opportunities for schools and a range of activities and training for adults, community groups and companies.

National Grid environmental education centre sites range in size from a few acres in an urban setting to 80 acres of meadows and ancient woodland.  All provide a safe and secure environment for all age groups to learn about their natural world.

National Grid
National Grid is one of the world's largest utilities, focused on delivering energy safely, reliably, efficiently and responsibly. Our principal interests are in the transmission and distribution of electricity and gas in the UK and US.

We own and operate over 6,800 kilometres of high-pressure transmission pipeline across Great Britain, and 132,000 kilometres of lower-pressure distribution gas mains in the North West, the Midlands, East Anglia and North London – more than half of Britain's gas transportation network, delivering gas to around 11 million homes, offices and factories.

We operate the high-voltage electricity transmission network across Great Britain, and own the network in England and Wales.

National Grid will continue to manage the National Gas Emergency Service freephone line 0800 111 999*.
