National Grid would like to thank the residents of Towcester for their patience and co-operation as essential gas mains replacement work in the town enters its final phase.
An investment project of £121,500 began in August 2008 to replace over 500 metres of metal gas pipe with new polyethylene plastic pipe along Watling Street in Towcester. The new pipe is more durable and will last over 80 years if left undisturbed.
The temporary traffic lights along Watling Street have now been removed and work along some side roads is nearing completion. Temporary traffic lights will return on Monday 26 October for up to three days between the junction of Chantry Lane and Church Lane, whilst the final connection work is completed. All works will be completed by Friday 28 October.
John Vogt, project manager, said: “This has been a difficult project and we appreciate the town’s patience. We have done everything possible to minimise disruption, working closely with the highways authority and working extended hours and at weekends too.”
The project is part of a national programme agreed with the Health and Safety Executive to replace all metal gas pipes within 30 metres of property over a 30-year period, ensuring a safe and reliable gas network for the future.
