What is Firm Frequency Response?
Frequency Response can be provided either as Mandatory Frequency Response, FCDM or Firm Frequency Response (FFR). FFR is the firm provision of either a Dynamic or non-Dynamic Response to changes in the system frequency. The key differences between FFR and Mandatory Frequency Response are: under FFR services can be provided by parties outside of the Balancing Mechanism and; a firm agreement regarding utillisation is made in advance of service provision.

Who can provide Firm Frequency Response
FFR is open to Balancing Mechanism Unit (BMU) and non-BMU providers, demand and generation, existing Mandatory Response providers and new providers alike. The Balancing Services Contracts Information Pack describes the minimum technical requirements for FFR.
How do I become a Firm Frequency Response provider?
FFR is procured via a monthly process and requires pre-qualification to establish a Framework Agreement prior to tendering. Where can I find more information about Firm Frequency Response?
The future requirement for FFR is described in the Market Information Report which is produced monthly.
Summaries of the tenders submitted to National Grid are contained in the Tender Report which is produced each month a tender is received.
Historic levels of FFR are contained in the Market Report which shows the volume of FFR held each day.
