Future Requirements

The analysis completed for the 2020 consultation report highlighted the impact of the changes in the electricity industry on requirements for Balancing Services.  To ensure that these services continue to be provided, an increased level of information is necessary for new and existing market participants.

The two reports below describe how the frequency response and reserve requirements will change over the coming years.  The spreadsheet below details the requirements for each year and for each scenario National Grid has constructed.

Constraint management will be a growing issue in the coming years and work is underway to forecast the requirements of Balancing Services to manage them.  Once this work is complete, a third Future Balancing Service Requirements report will be published.

Where National Grid subsequently enters into long term contracts, a summary of the contracted volume, and price paid, will be also be published.
