Environmental Management

Protecting the environment is extremely important to us and is a significant part of our reputation as a responsible business.

Investing in and running safe and reliable electricity and gas infrastructure means we use energy and raw materials, and produce waste.  The effect we have on the environment and the communities we serve depends on how  we, together with our supply chain, work. Our goal is to reduce any impact we may have and look for ways to improve the environment.

We look for ways to use resources more efficiently through good design, use of sustainable materials, responsibly refurbishing existing assets, and reducing and recycling waste. The majority of our waste is associated with our land remediation activities.

Our primary uses of fresh water are in our steam generation plants in the US and for cooling underground electricity cables in the UK. For the later, the majority of the water is returned to source after use.

Our performance measures in this area are the number significant environmental incidents, the number of employees working to certified ISO14001 environmental management systems, our emissions to air, the quantity of  waste we produce and our water use.
