Grain LNG

The UK faces a significant energy challenge over the coming years and the exciting developments taking place at the Isle of Grain, in Kent, will ensure National Grid plays a major role in meeting that challenge.

This challenge is the UK’s need to import a significant proportion of its gas, as domestic production is declining and the importation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an important part in filling this supply gap and meeting the strategic need for a more diverse energy mix.

National Grid Grain LNG Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of National Grid, has constructed the first of the country’s new liquefied natural gas importation and re-gasification terminals at the Isle of Grain in the south east of England. National Grid Grain LNG owns and operates the importation terminal.

Grain LNG has two state-of-the-art jetties and can berth and unload the world’s largest LNG ships – Q-Max vessels with a capacity of up to 265,000 cubic metres – into four of the world’s largest above-ground LNG storage tanks.

We continue to invest in our Grain LNG facility with capital expenditure to date of £1 billion and the capacity to import 20% of the UK’s gas demand.
