Safety conscious Cub Scout Connor Armstrong has got his pack in a mess by winning a competition organised by gas and electricity company National Grid.
Connor, aged 8, of 10th Radcliffe Cub Scouts, won first prize in the National Grid Home Safety competition, run as part of the company’s national sponsorship of the Cub Scout Home Safety Badge.
Connor’s prize included a £50 voucher to spend at the Scout Shops, a certificate signed by Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, and £500 for his pack to spend on equipment – which they used to fund a new mess tent.
Chris Murray, National Grid’s Director of Asset Management, went along to the Cub Scouts’ district camping weekend to present Connor with his prize and formally present the pack with their new mess tent.
Chris said: “As an ex-Scout I I’m delighted to have been invited along to present the prizes. Working with the Cubs on home safety is a perfect way of getting our gas safety messages across to youngsters. Congratulations to Connor and thank you to all who took part.”
Connor said: “It’s great – I’ve never won anything before! I didn’t think I’d win, and now we have a new mess tent!”
Group Leader Ann Chapman said: "It was a terrific surprise for one of our cubs to win and I’m delighted for Connor. National Grid’s prize money has come at the right time as our old mess tent became damaged and we were wondering how we would raise funds to replace it.”
