National Grid is to replace over 5km of gas mains in Hackney in a major investment in the borough’s gas supply network.
Old iron gas mains will be replaced with new hard wearing plastic pipes which will last for 80 years if left undisturbed. This essential work will provide Hackney with safe and secure gas supplies for the future.
Wherever possible the new pipes will be inserted into the old ones to minimise the need for excavations and reduce traffic disruption.
The work will be carried out between May and August 2009 by North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska, in two areas at the same time.
Scheme One
This will involve the replacement of approximately 3km of gas mains. Work will begin in West Bank and Cranwich Road in early May, moving on to Dunsmure Road, Mayfield House, Stamford Hill, Montefiorie Court, Woodberry Grove, Newnton Close, Seven Sisters Road and Amhurst Park.
Service pipes to properties are also being replaced. Engineers will need access to properties to ensure safe connection, but local residents and businesses will be given advance notice when this work is necessary. Work will not take place on Fridays.
Scheme Two
This will involve the replacement of 2km of gas mains in Lordship Road, Manor Park, Stamford Hill, Arbor Court London and Hugh Gaitskell House. Lane closures will be required at times and vehicle access to some residential properties may be restricted. All affected properties will be notified in advance.
National Grid Construction Operations Engineer Steve Blackburn said: “People should always ask to see identification before letting anyone into their property.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but these essential works have been carefully planned with the local authority to ensure that disruption is kept to a mimimum.
“The new pipes will provide Hackney with safe and secure gas supplies for many years to come.”
The work forms part of National Grid’s national mains replacement programme as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive. This involves replacing all metallic mains within 30 metres of buildings.
